New Zealand's oldest zoo, the Wellington Zoo was founded in 1906. Over the years, it has built up its population to over 400 animal ambassadors including endangered species such as sun bears and the Sumatran tiger. Native New Zealand animals are here such as the popular brown kiwi, and the elusive Tuatara, an animal unchanged since the age of the dinosaurs. Dedicated to conservationism, the zoo also offers a large range of programs for community involvement from educational programs to animal adoptions.
