Located in an historic and grand building built in 1892, the Museum is a featured facility for preserving Wellington's social and maritime history. On three levels are eight galleries, each documenting a part of the city's past such as a display on the Wahine Disaster and Wellington a Century Ago. A gift shop is onsite and The Board Room, a majestic room within the museum, is available for private function hire. Open daily from 10am to 5:30pm weekdays, and from 10am to 6pm. Once a family home built in 1858, the Colonial Cottage is now a museum that documents the family life in Wellington during that time. The home originally belonged to the Wallis family of twelve. Born in this Victorian house in 1888, Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) is renowned world wide as a prolific writer of short stories. The home today is restored to its former charm and features a video documenting her life, an exhibition of photographs and writing excerpts, and a dolls house constructed to reflect the story of the same name. The Wellington Cable Car The cable car is one of Wellington's quintessential attractions and a visit to the city is not complete unless it has been visited. Once built as transportation from the city to the farmland in Kelburn (today a suburb), the cable car travels a scenic route through tunnels, past Kelburn Park and the university, and stops in the Botanic Gardens.
