    Cycling in New Zealand

It is compulsory to wear a helmet when cycling in New Zealand. Helmets must meet one of a set of helmet standards (see New Zealand Approved Helmet Standards table). As well, helmets should fit snugly and squarely on the head, be brightly coloured or covered with reflective material, and be strapped firmly under the chin. Failure to wear a helmet, wearing a non-approved helmet, or wearing a helmet incorrectly risks a fine of up to NZ$55.

In addition to wearing a helmet, a cycle must contain specific safety features. At all times, a cycle must have good brakes, a rear reflector, and reflective material on either the pedals (yellow reflectors) or the lower part of the rider's legs (reflective straps). When cycling in darkness, a cycle must be fitted with a front-facing headlight and a flashing, rear-facing, red light, each visible from 100 metres (110 yards) away.
