Within the nature reserve of Aorangi Forest Park is the popular natural wonder of the large organ pipe-looking rock formations called the Putangirua Pinnacles. Also called 'hoodoos', they were formed by erosion caused by rain and floods. Each pinnacle represents where the rock was more resistant to erosion than its surrounding rock bed, leaving behind a tower. The area is also popular for recreational pursuits such tramping and camping.
