Five kilometres (3 mi) from the mainland, Kapiti Island is a land preserved from development, encouraging native flora and fauna to flourish. Within the island are two other reserves, the Nga Bird Sanctuary and a marine reserve. Today, many birds that are endangered elsewhere thrive on the island such as the little spotted Kiwi that is extinct on the mainland. Only 50 visitors are permitted on the island each day and a permit to visit much be purchased before visiting. There are a couple of tour companies that provide authorized visits to Kapiti Island.
