Newly opened in 2002, the Aratoi was designed to preserve and explore the natural, cultural and artistic history of the region through exhibits and programmes. The diverse collection ranges from historic watercolour paintings to contemporary sculpture, from European to Maori. A cafe is onsite providing coffees, teas, and light snacks. While the vast permanent collection is impressive, the changing exhibitions keep the Wellington City Gallery dynamic and innovative featuring artists from New Zealand and around the world. The contemporary collection features work in the form of visual art, painting, photography, sculpture, moving image, architecture, industrial and graphic design. The Gallery is also dedicated to promoting the arts through educational programmes and special events. Centrally located in Wellington's Civic Centre. Free public tours on Saturday and Sunday at 1pm.
